‘Scene’ in Preservation. ‘Sheffield Corporation Transport Department’ (SCTD) on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

This is my 500th. blog and to mark the occasion I am going back to my roots.

To where the interest in transport all began for me in The City of Sheffield where I was born and grew up.

It was always a puzzle to me how in what was then a dirty city, from smoke, soot, smog etc. why anyone should choose a colour scheme that was mainly cream.

Having done so to then go to the lengths that were gone to to keep the fleet clean was quite remarkable.

Should any old ‘SCTD’ employees get to read this, I take my hat off to you.

You did a fantastic job.

‘Scene’ with ‘yourbus’ in Ripley on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

In December 2017 ‘yourbus’ of Heanor, Derbyshire took delivery of a batch of Alexander Dennis  Ltd. (ADL) E20D’s with old style ‘ADL’ Enviro 200 bodies.

They were slightly unusual in that they were short buses compared to normal, seating only 33 passengers.

Registered YY67 USB/C/D/E and F with fleet numbers of 1450/1/2/3 and 4.

I have been aware of these buses for some time, the problem being that with the poor weather that we have had, it has been difficult to get acceptable images of them to display on my blog.

Although these images are not as good as I would wish. They are the best I have been able to get for the time being.

Being a Sheffield boy by birth and upbringing, any bus painted in shades of blue and cream is bound to draw my attention.

Particularly when it is as beautifully finished as this one is.

I have been a regular visitor to Chesterfield since the late 1940’s and I have seen many buses come and go.

It is always a pleasure then to welcome back a familiar bus that for many years I thought had gone.

‘Scene’ this week, ‘Gassing’ in Reading on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

I last wrote about about gas powered buses in Reading in a blog published on the 30th. of April 2016 which covered the single deck buses that had then recently been supplied to the ‘Reading buses’ fleet.

Scania and Alexander Dennis Ltd are still doing the honours but this time with double deckers.

A feature that appears to have come back into fashion on these buses is the return to two door operation.

I published a blog about Brighton on May 10th. 2017 where I commented that local operator ‘Brighton & Hove’ had done the same thing.

I had not previously picked up on a further purchase of gas powered single deckers until now.

So, time to set the record straight.

In early 2016, ‘Reading buses’ bought six gas powered Optare Solo’s from ‘Stagecoach in Lincolnshire’.

These buses, originally diesel powered, were converted to gas for use in Lincoln in 2011.

Presumably, the economics did not work out, hence the move to Reading.

Before entering service in Reading, they were thoroughly overhauled to modern standards and re-registered.

‘Scene’ in Bury, Single Deckers on’Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Bury is perhaps best known as the home of the ‘The East Lancashire Railway’ who’s terminus is just round the corner from Bury Bus Station.

A compact drive in drive out set up where the main operator is ‘rosso’ with First Greater Manchester’ providing some variety.

‘rosso’ is the operating name of ‘Rossendale Transport’ who are based at Haslingden in the Rossendale valley.

The word ‘rosso’ in Italian translates as red so it is not surprising then that red is the main colour in the fleet’s livery.

At the time of writing, it has just been announced that ‘Rossendale Transport’ are to be taken over by ‘The Transdev Blazefield’ (TB) group.

Having seen what ‘TB’ have done in the surrounding towns of Blackburn, Keighley, Burnley and on across into West Yorkshire. I consider this a very positive move.

See blog published 21/01/2018 for double deckers.
