‘Scene’ on the Wensleydale Railway at Leeming Bar on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Leeming Bar station lies on what was the North Eastern Railway’s (NER) line from Northallerton on the East Coast Main Line to Garsdale on the West Coast Main Line.

Never more than a useful cross country link, the line was closed in 1982. There were the occasional excursion trains until 1990 when the Wensleydale Railway Assosciation was formed with the intention of restoring passenger services on the line.

Today a preserved railway, the Wensleydale Railway (WR) operates between Northallerton West and Redmire a distance of 22 miles.

Running started in 2003 between Leeming Bar and Leyburn eventially extending eastward to Northallerton West and westward to Redmire from where the Ministry of Defence uses the line to transport Armoured Fighting Vehicles to and from Catterick Camp.

What was the station yard is now ‘home’ to a variety of stock.

In addition, they all carried girls names.

‘Scene’, an old ‘Skillset’ in Ripley’ on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadarunways.blogspot.co.uk’

It is the first time that Ripley, where I live has featured in one of my Blogs.

From a transport point of view it is quite an interesting place what with The Midland Railway Centre just down the road at Butterley and Crich Tramway Village being about five miles or so away. Both I might add readily available by bus.

Many less well used bus routes in Derbyshire are provided under contract by Derbyshire County Council.

Two such are the 143 and 144 which, generally operated by a single bus working between Ripley, Belper and Crich.

Initially this contract was let to ‘McEwens Coaches’ of Mansfield who became part of the ‘Skills’ group in 2013.

‘Skills’, are much better known as a long established and much respected coach operator.

The usual vehicle is,

MX07 BBZ ‘Skills Coaches’ Optare Solo M780SE /1

on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

For an image of this bus in ‘McEwens’ livery see my blog published 9th. of April 2014.

New to ‘Roberts’  of Hugglescote (Leicestershire).

on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

MX07 BBZ ‘Skills Coaches’ Optare Solo M780SE /2 on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadarunways.blogspot.co.uk’

However, another Solo that turns up from time to time is

MX04 VLZ ‘Skills Coaches’ Optare Solo M920

on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

New to ‘Hampson & Furness’ (Glossop) and previously with the defunct ‘Premiere’ of Nottingham amongst others.

MX04 VLZ ‘Skills Coaches’ Optare Solo M920 on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadarunways.blogspot.co.uk’

There are times when the Solo’s are not available in which case a substitute is provided generally from ‘Skills’ contract hire fleet.

A requirement of the contract is that buses used on tendered services must be DDA compliant with flat floors etc.

This has lead to some interesting vehicles being used.

One of which was,

M418 UKN ‘Skills Coaches’ Volvo Olympian / Alexander RH

on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

Formerly 95-D-222 with ‘Dublin Bus’.

Formerly with ‘London United’ as its TLA 10.

‘Scene’ in the Southwest. ‘The X46, Torquay to Exeter’ on ‘Dennis Basfords railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

Whilst holidaying in Devon over the last 50 years or so, I have made the Torquay to Exeter journey and return many times by both train and bus.

In recent years I have generally travelled on ‘Stagecoach Southwest’ (SS) service X46.

At one time it ran up to 10 journeys per day but I was surprised on my most recent visit to see that this has been reduced from 10 to 4 journeys per day.

A number of reasons for so doing are listed by ‘SS’ including long term disruption due to roadworks during the construction of The South Devon Highway which seemed to go on for years (my italics) and rail competition.

(I know about the roadworks which I suffered several times, they were horrendous)

The gaps in the timetable have been taken up by local (Exeter) operator ‘CM Coaches’.

The vehicles used by ‘SS’ have been upgraded to ‘Gold’ standard but the use of the X suffix to the X46 has been dropped.

Going forward, it will be interesting to see.

If ‘CM Coaches’ continue to compete.

If ‘SS’ continue to dedicate ‘Gold’ standard vehicles to the service.

‘Scene’ at ‘Transpire’s Peak Park Preserved Bus Gathering 2016 Part 4 on Dennis Basford’s ‘railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Before I start, may I leave a message for Mr. Stewart Morgan.

You contacted me in February with some questions re my blog.

I have tried to contact you several times on the link on your Email with no success.

If you could provide me with another contact address, I would be happy to try again.

Thank you,

Dennis

I do not attend many bus rallies because I find more than enough in the current scene to keep me busy.

However once a year ‘Transpire’ the Chesterfield based enthusiasts group holds its own event which for the last few years has been held at the ‘Peak Rail’ site at Rowsley in Derbyshire.

I have been a member for many years and have rarely missed so as usual, I went along and of course the camera went with me.

For parts 1, 2, and 3 see blogs dated 23rd. June 2016, 11th. September 2016 and 11th. April 2017.

The ‘Stagecoach’ operation in Chesterfield although operated from Stonegravels depot in Chesterfield is part of the larger ‘Stagecoach Yorkshire’ (SY) group and as such all the Chesterfield based buses carry the ‘SY’ legal address.

The ‘Gold X17’ branding is carried by buses working from Matlock via Chesterfield to Sheffield. A highly scenic route.

‘Scene’ in Brighton 1 on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

The dominant operator in Brighton is ‘Brighton & Hove’ (B&H) which is part of the ‘Go ahead’ group.

The fleet is largely double deck and it is interesting to see that ‘B&H’ have gone back to operating two door buses with more to come. Presumably that is to speed up boarding/alighting times.

Recent deliveries have included,
